We will not overlook Canada, our neighbor to the north, and will consider visiting the site of the planned Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor.

Alden B. Dow and Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Southeast Michigan - May 6, 2020

This pre-trip presentation by Craig McDonald, Director of the Alden B. The presentation will be held at the Kelloge Eye Center on May 6, 2020 from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Mid-Century Modern Midland - June 23, 2020

Midland, Michigan, has over 400 Mid-Twentieth Century Modern homes, churches, commercial, educational, and civic structures throughout the city. OLLI is planning a Day-Trip to Midland to see many of these buildings and visit the home and studio of noted architect Alden B. Dow, son of Dow Chemical’s founder, who’s innovative and dynamic work inspired other designers and architects to create these modern structures that are integrated throughout the Midland community. A drive through the community to our downtown lunch stop will include viewing several of the Mid-Century structures. The Dow Gardens with its unique Canopy Walk will also be visited.

A Focus on Water in Detroit - July 23, 2020

Michigan, often called Water Wonderland, is aptly nicknamed as it is nestled within the Great Lakes and contains over 11,000 lakes. The Great Lakes, in total, comprise the largest fresh water eco system in the world, containing over 20% of the earth’s fresh water and 84% of the United States. It has been easy to take this abundance for granted; however, this is no longer possible. There are alarming signs of pollution, contamination, invasive species, and breakdown of infrastructure. We will explore some of the threats to the lakes and the water supply, actions taken to protect them, and concerns for the future. The trip will include an opportunity to take in the beauty of the riverfront.
